Most Canada eTA applications are approved quickly — but not all. Here's what to expect and how to plan.
The short answer
Many eTAs are approved within minutes of submission, with the approval sent by email. However, a share of applications are flagged for additional review and can take several days.
Why some take longer
An eTA may need manual review if:
- The information doesn't clearly match your passport.
- Your travel or background needs extra verification.
- The system requests supporting documents by email.
If that happens, watch your inbox (including spam) and respond promptly to any request.
How far ahead should I apply?
We recommend applying at least 72 hours before departure, and earlier if you can. Never book a non-refundable flight assuming instant approval — apply first, then book once approved.
What "approved" looks like
When approved, your eTA is linked electronically to your passport. There's no document to print; the airline checks it automatically at check-in. Keep your approval email for reference.
Avoid delays
The most common cause of delay is a small mismatch in your details. We review your application carefully before submitting to reduce that risk — start on the Canada eTA page or read the full Canada eTA guide.
