Canada eTA: everything you need to know

Country guides · 22 May 2026 · 1 min read

If you're flying to Canada visa-free, you most likely need an eTA — an Electronic Travel Authorization linked to your passport. Here's what it is and how to get one.

Who needs a Canada eTA?

Visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport need an eTA. US citizens are exempt, but US permanent residents need one. If you require a visa to enter Canada, you apply for a visa instead — not an eTA.

How long is it valid?

An approved eTA is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that time you can visit Canada as often as you like, usually for stays of up to six months per visit.

What you need to apply

  • A valid passport from an eTA-eligible country.
  • An email address (your approval is emailed to you).
  • A payment method for the government fee and service fee.

Processing time

Many eTAs are approved within minutes, but some take longer if extra review is needed. Apply before you book a non-refundable flight, and ideally several days ahead of travel. See our detailed breakdown in How long does a Canada eTA take?.
